Set up the AI assistant (bring your own key)

Connect your own OpenAI or Anthropic account, pick a model, then turn the assistant on for a room.

What it is

KeyUp’s assistant uses your own account with an AI company like OpenAI or Anthropic. That’s what “bring your own key” means: you connect it with an API key, a password-like code from that company. You connect it once for your Space and pay that company directly for what you use. KeyUp doesn’t charge for AI, on any plan.

When to use it

Do this once per Space, before anyone can ask the assistant anything. Only the Space owner can set it up.

How to do it

  1. As the Space owner, go to People › Space settings › AI assistant and tap Add your AI key.

  2. Pick a provider: OpenAI, Anthropic, or Other (OpenAI-compatible). Paste your API key from that company. You create the key in your account on that company’s website.

  3. Pick a model (the version of the AI it uses). KeyUp suggests a fast, low-cost default, which works well for most Spaces.

  4. Name the assistant (for example, Lexi), so people know what to say or type to reach it. Tap Test to check the key works, then Save.

  5. Turn it on per room: open Room settings › Assistant in this room and switch it on. Everyone in the room sees an AI on badge.
