Set up the Radio Bridge gateway (beta)

Create a bridge in the dispatch console, copy its token (a private code), install the gateway, and run it.

What it is

The KeyUp radio gateway is the program on the computer next to the radio. It moves audio between the radio and your KeyUp room, and keys the radio when KeyUp talks. Radio Bridge is in beta, so screens may change.

When to use it

Use this once per radio you want to bridge, after you have the hardware from What you need.

How to do it

  1. In the KeyUp dispatch console in your web browser, open the Radio bridges panel and tap Add. Fill in the “Add a radio bridge” form: Name, Room, KeyUp to radio and Radio to KeyUp, Hang time (ms), Transmit limit (s) and an End of message tone (Off, Beep or Chirp). Then tap Create bridge.

Create a bridge in the dispatch console.
  2. A Gateway token box appears: “Bridge created. Copy this token now: it is shown only once.” Tap Copy token (or Copy config for a starter gateway.yaml), then Done, I saved it.

    Copy the gateway token.
  3. On the computer next to the radio, install Python 3 and the KeyUp gateway. During beta, email support@keyupradio.com and we’ll send it with instructions.

  4. Plug in the USB radio interface (AIOC or Digirig style) and connect it to the radio’s speaker/mic jack. Run python -m radio_gateway --list-devices to find the sound device and push-to-talk control to use.

  5. Put the token and the device names in gateway.yaml. “Copy config” in the dispatch console gives you a starter file to edit.

    Fill in gateway.yaml.
  6. Run --test-ptt to key the radio for 1 second, and --test-tone to send a short test tone. Use --levels to check the incoming radio level and set the squelch.

    Check the radio level.
  7. Run run to start the bridge and leave it running. Talk in the KeyUp room from your phone or watch, and listen on a radio to check it goes out. The bridge’s status pill in the dispatch console should show “Online”.
