What Radio Bridge is (beta)

Connect a KeyUp room to a real two-way radio, so KeyUp and radio users hear each other.

What it is

Radio Bridge is in beta. It links one KeyUp room to one two-way radio through a small program called the KeyUp radio gateway, running on a computer next to the radio. People on KeyUp hear the radio, and people on the radio hear KeyUp.

When to use it

Use it when part of your team uses radios and part uses KeyUp, and you want everyone on the same conversation without replacing the radios.

How to do it

  1. A Windows PC or Raspberry Pi next to the radio runs the KeyUp radio gateway. A USB radio interface, such as an AIOC or Digirig style cable, connects it to the radio’s speaker/mic jack.

  2. When someone transmits on the radio, the gateway hears it and plays it into the KeyUp room. People there see the bridge as “<bridge name> is talking”.

  3. When someone talks in the KeyUp room, the gateway keys the radio (presses its talk button) and transmits, then lets go after a short pause called the hang time. A transmit limit stops any one transmission from going on too long.

  4. Space owners and admins manage bridges from the KeyUp dispatch console, a web page you open in a browser (during beta, we send you the link). It shows every room and who’s talking, and lets you talk from your computer and listen to several rooms at once.

  5. Radio Bridge is an add-on for Crew and Business Spaces at +$10/month. During beta it’s free, and we turn it on for Spaces that ask. See Radio Bridge for the overview.
